250 Seat Church Sound System

Last updated

Quick answer

A complete 250 seat church sound system costs about $15,929 in equipment. It runs three 2,000 watt powered 12 inch mains and a subwoofer, a 32 channel console with a digital stage box, four wireless channels, a miked drum kit and personal in-ear mixing for the band.

A 250 seat room is roughly 1,900 square feet with about a 62 foot throw to the back row. That doubling of distance over a 100 seat room costs 6 dB, which is four times the power, and it is why this build steps up to 2,000 watt cabinets and adds a third box for the centre seats. It is also the size at which a band stops fitting on a sixteen channel console.

The other change at this size is the stage box. Running sixteen individual microphone cables from the platform to the booth is a mess that gets worse every year; one shielded Cat6 run carrying thirty-two channels does not.

The complete build: $15,929

Loudspeakers

A left and right pair leaves the centre seats weak in a room this wide, so a third box fills the middle. The subwoofer is what lets the mains stop working so hard on the low end.

Wireless microphones

Four channels: preaching, worship leader, a roaming handheld and a spare. How many channels you can legally run depends on which TV channels are empty at your address, not on your seat count.

Monitoring

Personal mixers rather than wireless in-ears. Wired mixers are cheaper than wireless at every mix count, not just at high ones, and they use no radio spectrum, which the wireless microphones need. What you give up is mobility, which matters for a worship leader and not for a drummer.

Why three loudspeakers rather than two

A left and right pair in a 250 seat room leaves a hole in the middle. Both boxes are aimed outward to cover the side seats, so the centre seats sit off-axis to both and hear less high frequency, which reads as a dull, indistinct voice exactly where the most people are sitting. A third box aimed down the centre aisle fixes it for the cost of one cabinet.

The alternative, and the better answer in a room that is narrow and deep rather than wide, is a centre cluster: one box directly over the platform covering everything. Check your own geometry in the coverage calculator before assuming a pair is correct.

Where the money goes in this build

Loudspeakers and their amplification take about a third of a 250 seat system budget, which is the correct proportion: they set the ceiling on everything else.

A beautiful console feeding inadequate loudspeakers is the most common way a church wastes a building fund. Run your own number through the AV budget allocator.

What you can skip

Skip the drum overheads, at first. The five piece kit here covers kick, snare and toms. Overheads make a kit sound like a kit, but on a platform that is not shielded they also put a great deal of cymbal into the house mix, which is usually the thing the congregation complains about. Add them after the stage volume is under control.

Skip the outboard processing. The X32 has a compressor, gate and four-band parametric EQ on every channel plus a full effects rack. A separate channel strip or graphic equalizer at this size duplicates what you already own.

Skip the second subwoofer. One is enough for 250 seats. Two in a room this size mostly buys an uneven low end, because the two sources interfere and the room decides where.

What to upgrade first

The stage volume, not the equipment. If the band is loud on the platform, the house mix is fighting it and no console solves that. The personal mixers in this build are the mechanism: they let the guitar amplifier come down and the drummer play quieter, which is worth more than any speaker upgrade. See reducing stage volume.

Then the preamps, if the room is treated and the platform is quiet. The X32 preamps are its honest compromise. The Midas M32 LIVE is the same workflow with a better front end and a heavier chassis, and the SQ-5 is the step to 96 kHz and an automatic microphone mixer that is genuinely useful for a reading rota.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a sound system for a 250 seat church cost?

About $15,929 for the equipment on this list, which covers loudspeakers, a subwoofer, a 32 channel console, a stage box, four wireless channels, a miked drum kit, choir microphones, personal in-ear mixing, a rack and assistive listening. Installation, rigging, conduit and electrical work are separate and commonly add 30 to 60 percent.

Do I need a stage box for a 250 seat church?

If the booth is more than about thirty feet from the platform, yes. A stage box puts sixteen or thirty-two preamps where the microphones are and carries them all to the console on one shielded Cat6 cable, instead of a sixteen pair copper snake that gets heavier and more damaged every year. It also makes adding a channel a software change rather than a cable pull.

How many wireless microphone channels can a church run at once?

It depends entirely on how many 6 MHz TV channels are empty at your building, not on the size of the church. A digital UHF system fits roughly eight compatible channels per empty TV channel and an analog one about four, so four channels is comfortable almost anywhere and twelve needs real coordination. Scan before you buy more than about six.

Are personal mixers better than wireless in-ear systems?

Usually yes, and the cost argument is stronger than most churches expect: at catalog prices a wired position runs a few hundred dollars against roughly a thousand for a wireless one, and wired stays cheaper at every mix count rather than only at high ones. Wireless in-ear systems also compete with your microphones for the same shrinking spectrum. What you pay the difference for is mobility, so put the worship leader on wireless and everybody else on cable.

Can we phase this purchase over two years?

Yes, and the order matters. Buy loudspeakers and amplification first, because they set the ceiling. Then the console and stage box, because they decide how many inputs you can ever have. Wireless and monitoring can wait a season. Acoustic treatment, if the room needs it, comes before all of them: it is the one thing no equipment purchase can compensate for.

Researched, not professional advice. This page is compiled from published manufacturer specifications, operator manuals, FCC rules, published standards and owner-review consensus, not hands-on testing. Sound system design, rigging loudspeakers overhead, and any electrical work are jobs for a qualified professional: have flown loudspeakers and their attachment points signed off by a structural engineer or a certified rigger, and have all wiring done by a licensed electrician to your local code. Wireless microphone rules change, so confirm the current FCC position before buying. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
