500 Seat Church Sound System

Last updated

Quick answer

A complete 500 seat church sound system costs about $32,838 in equipment. It runs four 2,000 watt mains and two 18 inch subwoofers, a 48 channel console with a 32 channel stage box, six wireless channels and personal in-ear mixing for a full band.

A 500 seat sanctuary is around 3,750 square feet with an 80 foot throw, and at that distance a point-source system starts running out of ability to keep the front and back rows within a few decibels of each other. This build is the largest honest point-source system: past about 700 seats, the right answer becomes a line array and a design engagement rather than a shopping list.

Two things change at this size that are easy to miss. The console needs to hold the whole input list without paging, and the subwoofers need to be cardioid, so the low end goes into the room and not onto the platform and into the open microphones.

The complete build: $32,838

Four boxes, and both subwoofers in cardioid. Anything flown here needs attachment points specified by a structural engineer or a certified rigger, using rated hardware, never conduit or a decorative beam.

Wireless microphones

Six channels in digital, not analog. Digital fits roughly twice as many compatible channels into the same shrinking spectrum, and at six channels that starts to matter.

Equipment only. At this size the installation is a project in its own right: flying four mains and two subwoofers, structural sign-off on every attachment point, conduit, three dedicated circuits and a professional room tuning. Budget 40 to 60 percent on top of this figure, and engage an integrator before ordering anything.

Prices were accurate when this list was compiled and change often, so confirm each one before the committee votes. Quantities are multiplied into the total. This total covers equipment only: it does not include installation labor, rigging, conduit, electrical work or permits, which on an installed system commonly add 30 to 60 percent.

Why this is the largest point-source system worth building

A point-source loudspeaker loses 6 dB every time the distance doubles. In an 80 foot room, the seat at 20 feet and the seat at 80 feet are 12 dB apart from the same box, which means the front rows are being shouted at whenever the back row can hear. Aiming and multiple boxes reduce that spread but cannot remove it.

A line array behaves differently: near the array the level falls at roughly 3 dB per doubling rather than 6, so front and back stay far closer together. That is the whole reason large rooms use them. Past about 700 seats, or in any room deeper than about 100 feet, the honest recommendation is a line array specified by an integrator with prediction software, not a bigger version of this list. See line array against point source.

What a 500 seat room needs that a 250 seat room does not

Doubling from 250 to 500 seats roughly doubles the equipment cost, but the changes that matter are cardioid subwoofers, delayed fills and digital wireless, not simply more of everything.

What you can skip

Skip the wireless in-ear channels for the band. One for the worship leader is right; eight is not. Each one competes with your six wireless microphones for the same shrinking spectrum. The wired personal mixers in this build do the same job for less money, with no coordination and no batteries.

Skip the outboard channel strips. The SQ-5 has compression, gating and parametric EQ on all 48 channels.

Skip the 4K cameras if video is on the same purchase order. Audio in a 500 seat room is the harder problem and the one people notice. Do the sound properly, then build the video system as its own project.

What to upgrade first

A professional acoustic measurement, before the order goes in. At 3,750 square feet with a high ceiling the room holds a lot of air, and reverberation is the one problem that no loudspeaker fixes. A measurement costs a fraction of this build and will change what you buy. Start with the acoustic treatment calculator to see whether the room is likely to be a problem at all.

Then delay speakers, if the room is deep. An 80 foot throw means the back rows hear the platform about 70 milliseconds late, and under a balcony they may hear almost nothing direct. Delayed fills, timed with the delay timing calculator, do more for intelligibility at the back than another main ever will.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a sound system for a 500 seat church cost?

About $32,838 for the equipment on this list. Installation at this size is a project rather than an afternoon: rigging, structural sign-off on every attachment point, conduit, three dedicated circuits and a professional room tuning commonly add 40 to 60 percent on top, so budget for the whole project rather than the equipment total.

Do we need a line array for a 500 seat church?

Usually not. A well-aimed point-source system with front fills and delayed under-balcony speakers covers 500 seats properly, and this build is that system. A line array becomes the honest answer past roughly 700 seats, or in any room deeper than about 100 feet, where a point source cannot keep the front and back rows within a reasonable level of each other.

What are cardioid subwoofers and do we need them?

A cardioid subwoofer array uses multiple drivers with deliberate delay and polarity so low frequency energy cancels behind the array and reinforces in front of it. In a church that means less low end on the platform, which means less rumble in the open microphones, a clearer vocal and a happier worship team. In a room this size with a band, it is worth the difference.

How many wireless channels can we run at 500 seats?

The seat count does not decide it. What decides it is how many 6 MHz TV channels are empty at your address. Digital systems fit roughly eight compatible channels per empty TV channel against about four for analog, which is why this build is digital throughout. Six channels is achievable almost anywhere; twelve needs a scan and real coordination.

Should the sound and video systems be bought together?

They should be planned together and bought separately. Planning together means the camera positions, the screen position and the loudspeaker positions do not fight each other, which is a real and expensive problem to fix afterwards. Buying separately means the audio, which is the harder problem and the one a congregation notices first, does not get squeezed by a camera line item.

Researched, not professional advice. This page is compiled from published manufacturer specifications, operator manuals, FCC rules, published standards and owner-review consensus, not hands-on testing. Sound system design, rigging loudspeakers overhead, and any electrical work are jobs for a qualified professional: have flown loudspeakers and their attachment points signed off by a structural engineer or a certified rigger, and have all wiring done by a licensed electrician to your local code. Wireless microphone rules change, so confirm the current FCC position before buying. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
