How many lumens does a church projector need?

What is a foot-lambert and why does nobody quote it?
A foot-lambert is the brightness your eye sees at the screen surface. Manufacturers quote lumens because it is a property of the projector alone, but lumens on its own tells you nothing without a screen size to spread it over.
The targets that matter for a church:
- 16 fL, lights down. The cinema standard. Only achievable if the house lights genuinely come down and there are blackout shades.
- 25 fL, house lights low. Workable in a room with controllable lighting and no direct window light.

An ambient light rejecting screen often does more for contrast in a bright room than another 2,000 lumens does, because it rejects light arriving from above while still reflecting the projector in front of it.
What screen gain does to the requirement
Gain is how much more light the screen reflects back at the viewer than a perfect diffuse white surface would. Higher gain buys brightness and costs viewing angle.
