Taking a Digital Keyboard

Stereo or mono, and why mono usually wins
Most keyboards have left and right outputs and most churches should sum them to mono. The stereo image a keyboard produces is designed for a listener sitting between two speakers at equal distance, which describes nobody in a congregation. Everyone in the room is closer to one loudspeaker than the other.
Mono costs one console channel instead of two and removes every phase and imaging problem a congregation seat would otherwise hear.

Taking only the left output is the hidden trap. Many keyboards assign stereo effects, rotary simulations and split patches across both outputs, so a left-only feed can lose half the sound on certain patches without anyone noticing until that patch is used.

A keyboard output is a line level signal from a buffered electronic output, which means a passive direct box is entirely adequate and has nothing to fail. Two channels is what a keyboard actually needs.

The commonest keyboard complaint is a low hum that appears when the keyboard is connected and disappears when it is unplugged. That is a ground loop: the keyboard and the console are both earthed, through different outlets, and a small current flows in the cable screen between them. It has nothing to do with the keyboard and nothing to do with the console.
Every decent direct box has a ground lift switch, which disconnects the screen at one end and breaks the loop. Try it first, because it costs nothing and fixes the problem most of the time. What you should never do is lift the safety earth on the keyboard power supply with an adaptor. That is a genuine electrocution risk on an instrument a person is touching, it is not a solution, and all electrical work in a church needs a licensed electrician to local code. The direct box lift is the safe version of the same idea because it lifts the audio screen, not the mains earth.
Channel setup
A keyboard arrives at the console already sounding the way the manufacturer intended, so the channel is mostly about making room for it rather than shaping it. The biggest risk is that a piano patch and a pad patch have completely different frequency content and level.
A high pass at 60 to 80 Hz keeps keyboard pad patches out of the range where they mask the bass guitar.

If the keyboard player changes between a full range piano patch and a low pad, the channel level will change with it. A compressor helps, but the real answer is asking the player to level their patches on the instrument.
What usually goes wrong
A long unbalanced instrument cable straight to the console, which picks up hum and loses high frequencies over any distance. Only the left output taken, so stereo patches lose half their content. A clipped channel because the line level signal was plugged into a microphone input with no pad. A ground loop treated by lifting the mains earth, which is dangerous and must never be done.
And the recurring musical problem: a keyboard player using a full range piano patch with a bass guitar already covering the low end, so the two mask each other and the mix turns muddy. That is solved by conversation rather than EQ, by asking the player to use a patch that leaves room below middle C.
