The buying order for a plant

  1. Decide where you are meeting before buying anything. A school gymnasium needs a portable system in cases; a leased unit you occupy all week can have an installed one.   8. Add video last, and only if you will staff it. Projection and livestream both need volunteers who show up every week, and an unstaffed camera produces worse output than no camera. Establish that the people exist before the equipment does, and start with one camera and good audio rather than three cameras and camera microphones.

What to skip, and what to buy used

Skip a subwoofer until the band genuinely needs one, which for a speech-led or acoustic plant may be never. Skip outboard processing entirely, because any digital console already includes a gate, compressor and equaliser on every channel. Skip a feedback eliminator, which buys 3 to 6 dB and is no substitute for a headworn microphone that buys 12 to 18. And skip channel count you cannot name a source for.

Buy used where the risk is low: stands, racks, cable to be tested, and passive loudspeakers you can hear before paying. That stretches a plant budget substantially. Be careful with anything containing a fan, an amplifier module or a lamp, where wear is invisible at the point of sale.

Equipment tuned to 617 to 652 MHz or 663 to 698 MHz is illegal to operate in the United States, cannot be retuned and is worthless at any price, and a great deal of it is still circulating secondhand. The real constraint is volunteers, not money

Church plants budget for equipment and forget to budget for people, which is why so many plant systems end up more complicated than the team can operate. A system is only as good as the person running it on a Sunday when the usual operator is away, and in a plant that person is often somebody who agreed to help ten minutes earlier.

Design for that. Fewer channels that are always patched the same way beat more channels that move around. A saved default scene that anyone can recall to reach a known working state prevents most Sunday failures. None of this costs money and all of it determines whether the equipment you bought actually produces good sound.

The corollary is to buy equipment that is hard to set up badly. A wireless system with no transmitter gain to set cannot be handed to a guest speaker wrongly. If you are fitting out a space you will occupy for years, do the cable and conduit work for the finished system now, even if the equipment arrives over several years. Pulling cable twice costs far more than pulling it once, and a conduit path installed during a fit-out is nearly impossible to add later.

Everything else should be bought for the current congregation. A plant that doubles will sell or redeploy a 16 channel console without much loss, and will have had two years of a system sized correctly rather than two years of paying interest on capacity it did not use.
