Powered vs Passive Speakers for a Church

Powered speakers win for portable and small installed systems because the amplifier and processing are already matched inside the box. Passive speakers win above about four boxes, because one amplifier channel pair costs far less than two more powered cabinets and every amplifier lives in one lockable rack.

For two to four loudspeakers, buy powered: the amplifier is matched to the driver at the factory and there is no processor to set up wrong. Above about four boxes, or anywhere the speakers are flown, passive plus a rack amplifier is usually cheaper and always easier to service.

The catch that decides most church projects is not audio, it is electrical. A powered speaker needs a switched power outlet wherever it hangs, and getting mains power to a bracket twenty feet up a sanctuary wall is a licensed electrician and a permit, not an afternoon. Compare complete systems rather than cabinets, including the amplifier, the processor and the electrical work. The crossover point is consistent.

The outlet count is the hidden cost. Electrical work to get a switched circuit to a flown bracket is quoted per drop, and it is rarely under several hundred dollars each.

Choose powered speakers for portable and small systems

Choose passive speakers for installed and flown systems

Once loudspeakers are permanently mounted, passive wins on almost every axis. All the electronics live in one rack in a closet, on one circuit, behind one power conditioner, where they can be cooled and serviced without a lift. A failed amplifier channel is swapped in ten minutes without touching the speaker. And the single most expensive part of the install, getting mains power to height, disappears entirely.

Do powered speakers sound better because the amplifier is matched?

They sound more predictable, which is not the same thing. The manufacturer has set crossover, limiting and equalisation for those exact drivers, so a volunteer cannot mis-size the amplifier or set the crossover wrong. A well-configured passive system with a processor reaches the same place, but it requires somebody to configure it.

How much amplifier power do passive church speakers need?

Size the amplifier to roughly twice the continuous rating of the loudspeaker so peaks have headroom, then set the limiter to protect the driver. Can I mix powered and passive in one system?

Yes, and many churches do. Powered mains on stands with passive under-balcony fills driven from a rack amplifier is a common and sensible arrangement. Keep the system processing in one place so the delay and equalisation for the fills is set relative to the mains rather than guessed at each box.

What happens when a powered speaker amplifier fails?

The whole cabinet goes out of service and usually leaves the building for repair, so plan a spare. Churches with four powered boxes should own a fifth, or at least know where one can be rented by Saturday. With passive speakers you keep one spare amplifier in the rack closet, which is cheaper than a spare loudspeaker.

Is a powered speaker safe on a speaker stand?
