For the person who needs it, a hearing loop is the better system and it is not close. Somebody with a telecoil-equipped hearing aid switches their own device to T and hears the service directly, with nothing to collect, nothing to wear and nothing that marks them out. That dignity is the real argument, and no radio system matches it.

The complication is that a room loop is a copper perimeter wire driven by a loop amplifier, commissioned to a field strength standard, which is an installation quoted by a contractor rather than a box you order. An FM or 72 MHz system is a kit that works in any building on the day it arrives. Most churches should price both. Choose a hearing loop when the building and the budget allow it

The user experience is the whole case. No receiver to collect from an usher, no battery to have gone flat, no earphone to share, and nothing visible. People who would never walk to the back to ask for a device will use a loop, which means a loop is used and a box of receivers frequently is not. If the goal is that people can actually hear the sermon rather than that a box has been ticked, this matters more than any specification.

The costs are real and mostly not equipment.
