The legal position, stated plainly
Religious entities, including places of worship, are exempt from Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act. That exemption is real and it is broad: it covers the building and the services held in it. A church that only holds worship services in its own building is not legally required by Title III to provide assistive listening.
The exemption is also narrower in practice than most churches assume, and there are two common situations where it stops applying. If a church rents its auditorium to the public, for concerts, community events, conferences or civic meetings, that activity can fall outside the religious exemption and bring the requirement with it. What hearing-aid compatible actually means
It means a receiver that can feed a hearing aid directly rather than requiring the user to take their hearing aid out and wear an earphone over it. In practice this is a neck loop: a wire loop worn around the neck that generates a magnetic field, picked up by the telecoil built into most hearing aids. The user switches their hearing aid to the telecoil setting and hears the service through their own device, already adjusted to their own hearing.
This matters more than the raw receiver count. A person with hearing aids who is handed an earphone must remove the aids that are already compensating for their specific loss, then listen through a generic earphone. The result is usually worse than what they started with, which is why unused receivers accumulate in drawers.
