A dynamic microphone converts sound with a coil and a magnet, needs no power, and tolerates levels that would overload anything else. A condenser uses a charged diaphragm, needs 48 volt phantom power from the console, and is far more sensitive, which is exactly what you need when the source is several feet away.
So the rule is distance. Within a few inches of something loud, use a dynamic. More than about a foot away from something quiet, use a condenser. The table below applies that to every source a church actually mics, and the type by source chart goes further.

Phantom power is 48 volts supplied by the console on the same XLR cable. Condensers need it, dynamics do not use it and are not damaged by it on a correctly wired balanced line. Switch phantom off before patching anything, because a cable fault with phantom live can put a loud thump through the system.
Choose a dynamic for anything close, loud or handled
Every vocal microphone on a church platform should be a dynamic, and so should every microphone within a few inches of a drum or a guitar cabinet. The SM58 at $109.00 and the SM57 at $109.00 cover almost all of it, and neither needs power, a battery or any care about phantom.
The second reason is rejection. A cardioid dynamic on a platform hears far less of the wedges, the drums and the room than a sensitive condenser would, and in a church that translates directly into gain before feedback. Putting a condenser on a worship vocal in a room with floor wedges is one of the most common and most expensive mistakes a church makes.
They also survive the building. Dropped on tile, left in a hot van, handled by children, rained on at an outdoor service: a dynamic shrugs off things that end a condenser. For a rota of volunteers that robustness is a specification, not a bonus.
Choose a condenser wherever the microphone cannot get close
A choir standing six feet below a hung microphone, a lectern eighteen inches from a gooseneck, a pair of overheads four feet above a kit: none of those work with a dynamic, because a dynamic simply is not sensitive enough. Accept the conditions that come with them. They need 48 volt phantom on every channel, they hear the whole room including the loudspeakers, and they are physically fragile. A condenser at distance in a reverberant sanctuary will need more care with equalisation and placement than anything else on your input list, and there is a hard ceiling on how much gain it can take before the room feeds back.

Can we use a condenser for worship vocals?
On a platform with floor wedges, no. A condenser is far more sensitive and will reach feedback long before a dynamic does, and it hears the drums and the wedges as well as the singer. The exception is a church already using in-ear monitors with a quiet platform, where a condenser handheld can sound noticeably more detailed on a skilled lead vocalist.
Will phantom power damage our dynamic microphones?
No, not on a correctly wired balanced XLR line. A modern dynamic sees equal voltage on both signal pins and ignores it entirely. The real risks are ribbon microphones, which phantom can destroy, and patching a cable while phantom is live, which can send a loud thump through the system and into the loudspeakers.
Why does our choir sound thin and distant?
Usually height and angle rather than the microphone. Hanging condensers want to be two to four feet above and one to two feet in front of the front row, aimed at the back row rather than straight down, with at least three times the mic-to-source distance between adjacent microphones. Do condensers need a preamp as well as phantom power?
No, the console preamp is the preamp. Some gooseneck and hanging models carry a small in-line preamp module on the cable, which is part of the microphone rather than an extra purchase. What condensers do need is a console channel with genuine 48 volt phantom, which every digital mixer and most analog ones provide.
Which type is better for a livestream?
Neither type wins on its own. The livestream sounds better when the source is close and the room is not, which usually means more dynamics on the platform rather than fewer. Where condensers earn their place on the stream is on the quiet sources a camera microphone would never capture, such as an acoustic guitar or the choir.
