How many rack units does a church system need?

Rack units are 1.75 inches each, and depth matters as much as height: a standard 19 inch depth rack will not take a deep amplifier, and a shallow studio rack will not take most power amplifiers at all. Check the published depth of the heaviest item before choosing the rack.

Heat is what kills church equipment

Amplifiers and processors dissipate heat, and a rack is a box. Packed solid, the warm air from the amplifier rises directly into the equipment above it, and every item in the rack runs hotter than its design assumes. Electrolytic capacitors degrade faster at higher temperatures, which is why a rack that runs hot shortens the life of everything in it rather than just the amplifier.

The fixes are simple and they are routinely skipped. Leave a vented unit or a blank panel above each amplifier. Put the amplifier at the bottom of the rack where the heaviest item belongs anyway, and the light, cool items above it. If the rack lives in a closed cupboard, that cupboard needs ventilation, because a sealed cupboard is a second box around the first.

Weight matters for the same practical reason. A 12U rack filled with amplifiers is heavy enough that it should not be moved by one person, and a rack on castors that tips is a serious hazard. Heavy at the bottom, light at the top, and braced or anchored if it lives anywhere a child could pull on it. A small church often has no booth and no cupboard, so the rack sits in the sanctuary where people can see it. An open wooden rack solves that: it holds the equipment properly, it ventilates naturally because it has no sides, and it does not look like road equipment parked in a historic room. It is not the choice for anything that needs locking away.

Large or multi-campus: the rack as a standard

A church with several buildings should be specifying the rack as a whole rather than buying units as they are needed. Identical layout at every campus means a volunteer or a contractor can work at any building, a fault is diagnosed the same way everywhere, and spares are interchangeable.
